A recent IRI survey reports that attracting and educating new advisors is the greatest challenge in marketing variable annuities and that negative press is no longer a factor.

Educating consumers is also both a challenge and an opportunity for insurers as nearly 2/3 of consumers are either unfamiliar with or have no opinion of annuities generally.

As insurers have done a better job designing retirement income products to help bridge the chasm between pre-retirement savings levels and retirement income needs, the popular press has largely come to appreciate the value of the asset class.

The new goodwill notwithstanding, odds are against Ricky Gervais hosting the next IRI annual meeting.
